Rocky Mountain Regional Veterans Affairs Medical Center

Client U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE)
Completion Date Dec. 2017
Location Aurora, Colorado
Completed by Sturgeon Electric Company, Inc.

The Rocky Mountain Regional Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center replaces  the former Denver VA Hospital built in 1950. It encompasses 1.5 million square feet of new hospital and is comprised of 11 large, independent buildings – most six stories tall – interconnected by a central concourse that spans more than two city blocks. The 35-acre campus includes diagnostic and treatment facilities, ambulatory care clinics, laboratories, and inpatient beds in acute and critical care, mental health, rehabilitation, spinal cord injury, and long-term care.

In terms of size, scope, and financial risk, the Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center is among the largest, most complex, and most challenging projects Sturgeon Electric has undertaken in its 100-plus year history.

In early 2016, Sturgeon Electric was invited to bid, and then selected by the Kiewit/Turner (KT) joint-venture and USACE to assess the project, which was already four years into construction and was 50 percent electrically complete. By collaborating intensely, using innovative technology, and with excellent leadership, our team reduced the electrical schedule by 18 months. At the peak of the project, 350 electricians were working on site.
